This web site is a gallery of miscellaneous steam locomotive photos, most of which are not my work. The images on this page are from the United States, while those in The Canada Collection are from railroads operating in that country. Of the images on this page, some were part of my father's small collection of railroad photographs, or came from the collection of my brother, David V. Leonard. Gary P. Thompson of Normal, Illinois has contributed several views from his collection. A group of Illinois Central photos are the work of the late Bruce Meyer, familiar in Midwest railfan circles, and his brother David Meyer, whom I knew while living in Bloomington, Illinois during my high school and college years. Tom Rock of Cleveland, Tennessee (T.D.R. Productions) also provided several Illinois Central and other images. Robert Leffingwell loaned a number of photos of Baltimore & Ohio, Nickel Plate and other Midwestern railroads he took in the 1950s. Other photographers whose work can be credited include James Adams, H. W. Pontin and J. R. Reid, but many of these images are of unknown origin and often the dates and locations of the photos are also unknown. Where I have information about the source I give credit where credit is due. Some images have been scanned from postcards. For an assortment of miscellaneous steam locomotives taken by me, or by my father Dr. Richard D. Leonard, visit the "Miscellaneous Railroads" page in Richard Leonard's Steam Locomotive Archive. In that Archive you will also find pages devoted to my steam engine photography for several specific railroads: the Burlington Route, Canadian Pacific, Grand Trunk Western, Illinois Central, New York Central, Nickel Plate and Union Pacific — along with some other interesting items. In addition there is a web site devoted to my photos of Union Pacific Big Boys and Challengers. My New York Central Collection includes photos of steam locomotives — mostly by others but some of my own — and diesel photos taken by me. There is a page of Alton Route Steam presenting photos from several sources. For some entertaining speculation about steam locomotives that were never built, visit my Fantasy Steam Page. Click on the thumbnails below to bring up a full size image with commentary. You can also page through the collection sequentially. For further enjoyment, explore all the links at left. Our composition standard for these pages requires that the outermost locomotive in each row of thumbnails must face inward, and the direction may reverse only once in each row. Therefore, images may not be presented in alphabetical order by railroad line, nor in numerical sequence within a given railroad. However, all images applicable to a given railroad are presented contiguously. Dr. Richard Leonard
